Difference BICS connection Xcelsius 2008/2011 and BOE 4.0

Since Xcelsius 2008 SP2 it is possible to connect to a Bex-query through a BICS connection. You could publish your dashboard on the SAP portal (with at least Netweaver 7.01 SP5 installed). As the BOE 3.1 platform does not know the BICS connection, it is not possible to publish your dashboard with BICS to Infoview.

In the new BusinessObjects 4.0 platform it possible to connect a WebI report directly to a Bex-query through a BICS connection (thus no need to place a universe in between as in 3.1).

Hey now we have a BICS connection in Xcelsius AND the platform knows also BICS connection, stands to reason that now we can publish a dashboard with BICS connection to Infoview as well then, right?

The BICS connection defined in Xcelsius 2011 is a different one then the BICS connection used in the BOE 4.0 enviroment.

So leave it to the SAP to release 2 different connections with the same name. :-(

  1. Have you tried the new WebI to BW/BICS connectivity? How is it?

Hi Donald, I have tried the new WebI BICS connection. There is better support for hierarchies and there is an improvement in performance when running the report. I found out that WebI uses a ‘Transient Universe’ to connect to the BEx query. As far as I can see, this just means that it is no longer necessary for the developer to create a Universe in the Universe Design tool (now called the IDT) to connect to BW as these Transient Universes are leveraged.
